I’ve accidentally slipped into young adult (aka directed at teens) reading with my past few choices, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I bought it forever ago because it was on sale at Wal-Mart, I do judge books by their covers, and this one intrigued me.
Its called TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY by Jay Asher and it’s an interesting powerful look at suicide from the point of view of one left behind, Clay, who felt he could have helped if Hannah, the one who had committed suicide a few weeks earlier, had only let him. The story is told by Clay listening to a set of tapes Hannah made for 13 people in her life that she feels led to her to giving up, and Clay receives the tapes because she wants each of the people she feels who kept holding her down and kicking her to know what they did, and how one event led to another. I don’t want to give it away, but it was something unlike I’ve ever read before, and I am having my little sister read it as soon as I get the chance to give it to her. I think it’s a great book for anyone struggling with the snowball effect that can happen socially with rumors and other social hardships that school is.
Good read as far as I’m concerned.
